More than Mountains - Chris Trembley

More than Mountains - Chris Trembley

The sun quickly fades as we begin our descent down the mountainside. Halfway down we stop and put on our headlamps as the darkness engulfs the forest. A steep, rock-covered trail is revealed with each step. Upon reaching the bottom we stop at a nearby river to refill our water and take in the peaceful sounds of a summer night in New Hampshire.

For Chris Trembley, this is a weekly experience as he treks through the White Mountains searching for backwood compositions that most don’t even know exist. We were fortunate enough to join him on a recent trip and capture the experience and story behind his photography.

Landscape photography is arguably one of the most popular and accessible forms of photography. Regardless of where one may be, there is surely something to photograph. This does not mean, however, that landscape photography is easy. In fact, it is the challenge of this niche that often motivates individuals to get out and shoot. More times than not the best shots are the ones that come from hiking up a mountainside or bushwhacking through dense forest. For many, these may seem like major obstacles but for Chris, they are all part of the adventure. It is not just the capture he is after but the experience at large. Chris noted that “My missions are always about getting out there, getting my legs moving. If I get a photo that's a bonus but sometimes I walk away with nothing and I’m still happy.” In a creative landscape that is obsessed with results and keeping up with the latest trends, it is refreshing to hear a mindset like this. Passion is doing something regardless of the result and what others may think.

For most, photography began as an outlet or a means to capture an adventure. There is an element of chase involved with the process as one searches for the desired composition. This exists no matter what form of photography you practice. We believe it’s crucial to keep in mind that no matter what level of photographer you are there is so much more to photography than just the capture. Appreciating a moment for what it is can often leave you with better results and will allow you to best engage with your creativity. If there’s anything we have learned from Chris it is to slow down and enjoy the process because that is why we all picked up a camera in the first place.

A huge thanks to Chris Trembley for allowing us to join him on his adventure and for sharing his story. If you would like to have your story featured please do not hesitate to reach out to our team!
