Consider the Card Reader
Photo and video work can be broken down into a few different stages. Typically, it begins with planning, followed by shooting, and then, of course, the editing stage. We get it… it’s not quite that simple and we are by no means understating the amount of work that goes into all of this. In fact, we think that some parts of the process don’t get the credit they deserve. For example, the file transfer process between the shoot and the edit is one of the most vital parts of your creative flow.
This is where card readers come into play. Card readers bridge the gap from camera to computer and come in many different flavors, boasting a variety of features. Luckily, we offer numerous readers to fit a range of creative needs.
New USB-C Readers
At a glance, these two new USB-C readers may appear to be similar, and while they are both capable of transferring files, each provides a different set of features. The USB-C Multi Card Reader offers extended compatibility with 4 card slots for SD, microSD, CompactFlash, and CFexpress Type B. We understand that many photographers still enjoy using their CompactFlash cards, and we wanted to make sure you felt heard.
With the Multi Card Reader, you get more choices. If you’re using your beloved D800 but also have a Z8, this reader will support all of your media needs. Better yet, you can run multiple cards at the same time, meaning you can back up files even faster. You can achieve transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps with CFexpress Type B cards and 90MB/s speeds with UHS-I SD cards. This is a great all-around option for those who shoot with mixed media.
The USB-C Card Reader and Hub, a close relative of the former, offers some unique features. This reader has two UHS-II SD card slots, allowing you to access both cards simultaneously for redundant backups. At top speed, it transfers at 380MB/s, meaning you’ll be able to get back to shooting in no time. What’s special about this reader is that it is also a hub. This means you can connect other devices, such as a monitor via the HDMI-A port, two USB-C ports for data and charging, and an additional USB-C port. The hub features a 100W USB-C PD (power delivery) port, allowing rapid pass-through charging even while backing up files. Weighing just over 2 ounces and measuring less than 4 inches in length, this reader is truly a powerhouse.
Trifecta Card Readers
While both USB-C readers are slim on their own, we understand that some of you may be looking for something even more compact. Enter the Trifecta Card Readers. Offered in both UHS-I and UHS-II versions, these readers are under 3 inches long and weigh less than an ounce. They are ridiculously small. Both are constructed from aluminum alloy, making them durable yet lightweight.
These Trifecta Card Readers offer USB-C, USB-A, and USB Micro-B connections, ensuring compatibility with a variety of devices. The main difference between the two is that the deluxe variant, while still UHS-I compatible, was designed to handle the faster speeds of UHS-II cards with transfer rates of up to 300MB/s. The standard Trifecta offers transfer speeds of up to 90MB/s, making it ideal for UHS-I speed cards.
Given the size and compatibility of these readers, they are an extremely easy device to keep in your camera bag for travel or local shoots. You won’t even notice them until it's time to back up your captures, making them the perfect camera companion.
Concluding Thoughts
Card readers are an often forgotten piece of the puzzle but serve a great purpose. No matter what your circumstance, we always recommend keeping a card reader on hand. With their compact size and impressive performance they are just a no brainer for any photographer or videographer.
