Easy Steps to Maintain Your Camera Lens
Taking care of your gear is a crucial part of ensuring you can keep creating content in the long term. We’ve covered how to maintain your camera battery performance and keep your memory cards in tip top shape, but what about your camera lens? After your camera body, your lens might just be your biggest initial investment, and it's worth taking the time to clean and maintain.
Clean Your Lens
Periodic cleaning is critical to extending the life of your lens and ensuring peak performance. Exposure to sweat, rain, dust, and fingerprints can all cause damage to the special finish on your lens and affect the quality of your image capture. First, gather your cleaning supplies. You’ll need a blower, OpticClean Cleaning Fluid, and lens cleaning cloths.
Step 1: Use the blower to remove dust or debris from the surface of the lens.
Step 2: Put a small amount of lens cleaner onto the cleaning cloth. Gently wipe the lens in a circular motion, working from the center to the outside.
Step 3: Using a dry cleaning cloth, wipe down the outside of the lens.
When you’re on the go, use a Premium Optic Cleaning Pen. This durable lens pen is dual sided to remove smudges and fingerprints with the carbon tip and dust and lit with the goat-hair brush.
While it’s relatively easy to clean your lens yourself, you may also want to attend a lens and sensor cleaning event at your local camera store. Representatives from the camera company will be there to help and answer any questions.
Protect Your Lens
An easy step to protect your lens is to add a lens filter. The right filter does more than augment your image capture, it can also protect your lens. Not sure where to start? Check out our full filter breakdown. The HGX line of ProMaster filters are crafted from ultra-hardened glass and Repellemax II coating. They repel dirt and transmit brilliant light to achieve the clearest possible image.
Lens hoods, in addition to preventing glare and lens flare, can provide physical protection by extending beyond the end of your lens. They can help prevent scratches, bumps, and other damage that can occur during everyday use or accidental drops.
You should always store your camera and lens in a quality bag designed specifically for protecting it. Whether you need a smaller satchel or bigger backpack to fit your full kit, ProMaster has one to fit your needs. When your lens is not on your camera, attach front and rear lens caps and store it in a padded lens pouch.
Keeping your gear in tip top shape is an easy way to ensure your investment keeps up with your photography. Still have questions? Reach out to the experts at ProMaster for individual support or visit your local camera store for in-person support.
